Invisible Dog Fencing: Keep Your Landscape Beautiful

Tuesday, 29, April 2008

Planting trees, washing windows, watering flowers, cleaning the gutters, cutting the grass…with all of the care you put into your home and lawn, would you want to hide them from the rest of your neighborhood? Of course not!

Now, what about your pet?  You don’t want him to be cooped up in a small lot all day.  He needs an open area to roam and play, free from danger and constant supervision. A fence around your lot is one option to keep your dog safe.  Unfortunately, building a fence around your property can be time-consuming and costly, not to mention unattractive.  Plus, many neighborhoods do not allow residents to put up fencing around their properties.  On the other hand, pets often look for ways around the fence and end up digging up flowers and greenery, making dangerous holes around the perimeter and costing you even more money.

Luckily, the solution to your dilemma is practically invisible.  Invisible pet fencing, often referred to as wireless dog fences or electric dog fences, is a way to keep your yard beautiful and your pet happy.  It’s easy to install (or have professionally installed) and effortless to operate.

There are numerous advantages to invisible fencing.  All the hard work and time that you have invested in your lawn pays off.  You don’t have to hide it behind a bulky fence.  Your pet has an open space to live and play without supervision.  You can feel safe knowing that your beloved pet isn’t chasing cars, or the mail carrier, down the street.  Best of all, unlike traditional fencing, underground fencing is affordable.  Complete underground kits can cost thousands of dollars less than traditional fencing.

So, how does an invisible fence work?  An underground wire is installed to establish a boundary around your property.  If you already have an above-ground fence in place, the wire can be installed along the fence.  A transmitter is placed in a hidden location of your choice (Hint:  garages are a perfect place to conceal the transmitter).  The transmitter sends a radio signal across the wire.  If your dog gets close to the fence, a special collar will give out a warning signal.  If your dog touches the fence, then it will get a light shock.  But have no worries, the shock will not hurt your pet!

It all sounds so easy, that you may be asking yourself what drawbacks are involved with invisible fencing.  Fortunately, there are not many disadvantages that can’t be easily taken care of.  If your neighbor (who doesn’t know you have a new, underground fence) is walking her dog and sees your dog running straight for her, then she may be a little frightened.  Don’t worry, you will have yard signs that let your neighbor know about your new fence.

Another disadvantage involves the courage of your pet.  Since the shock of the fence doesn’t hurt your pet, some aggressive breeds may run through the fence barrier.  This is not a normal occurrence, because most dogs learn the boundaries after only two encounters with the fence.

If you are trying to decide if an invisible fence is right for you, remember that you have many options when choosing an invisible fence.  Depending on your lot size, brand preference, and price range, there is a variety of do-it-yourself and professionally-installed fencing.  PetSafe, UltraSmart, Innotek, Dogtra, and SmartDOG are just a handful of brands that offer underground fencing.

Just think, a way to let your pet stay active while showing off that beautiful landscape.  Invisible fencing like  radio dog fences can do just that.  It’s easy to install and operate, affordable, and it keeps your pet safe from outside dangers.  It also allows you free time that you would normally spend supervising your pet.  If you’re in the market for an invisible fence, check out all your options before you make a decision.  Then, imagine how beautiful that invisible fence will be.
